Human Proteome Project (HPP)
Mission Statement of HPP
The mission of the Human Proteome Project (HPP): “The Human Proteome Project, by characterizing all 21 000 genes of the known genome, will generate the map of the protein based molecular architecture of the human body and become a resource to help elucidate biological and molecular function and advance diagnosis and treatment of diseases ”

Two sessions featuring the Human Proteome Project (HPP) took place as part of the HUPO 9th Annual World Congress in Sydney, in September 2010.
The first was an open session of the HPP Working Group, held on Sunday, September 19th, which addressed major issues stemming from a draft document that had been circulating among interested parties over the previous two weeks. Part of the session was also devoted to preparing the official HPP launch session planned for Thursday, September 23rd.
This second session consisted of a presentation (view here) followed by a general discussion. That discussion resulted in a general agreement (by show of hands) from the audience that HPP should be launched with the understanding that its first priority should be to define long term (10 years) deliverables and detailed short term (5 years) deliverables and milestones.
The HPP consortium will coordinate initiatives structured by chromosome built for gathering knowledge on proteins. A general document presenting the goals, objectives and action plan for HPP should be made publicly available and published in proteomics journals very soon.
A workshop took place in Busan (Korea) on March 30, 2011 for the creation of the HPP consortium. A short summary of the discussion is provided, followed by the recommendations and decisions forwarded to the HUPO Executive committee that validated these decisions on April 5, 2011.
